I came across this little prairie crocus in early June, as most of the other crocuses were beginning to disappear. It stood straight and tall as if aspiring to reach like the old trees that towered around it. I’ve given a lot of thought to photographing flowers recently, and it’s similarities to photographing people. It’s fairly easy for photographers to make a photograph of people that initiates emotion without much thought, because the human element captures our immediate attention. Yet it’s rare to see emotion in nature photography. Maybe it’s simply because our daily lives are flooded with so much visual input, or maybe it’s simply because not many photographers put enough thought into what they do. I’ve taken so many photographs of flowers, but what’s one from the other? How can a photographer really capture the essence of what makes our mountains so inspiring?
With such an overload of imagery in the world these days, it’s time to bring depth and emotion back into nature photography. So this last shoot I stepped it up a notch. Keep a close eye on the Highline Blog to see what’s been developing since the crocuses went away.
